Quiché Joyabaj Project, Guatemala

A Syrupy single origin coffee with notes of Caramel and Peach

Light roast

Even though the Joyabaj area in the Quiché department has a lot of delicious coffee, there has not been focus on making local processing available, until last year. We are happy to have this syrupy coffee with notes of caramel and peach from the new mill in the area.

The Quiché department is one of the largest in Guatemala, with its name coming from the K’iche’ people who are the largest pre-Columbian indigenous group in Guatemala.

From a lack of investments in the Joyabaj region migration of labor and experienced harvesters are leaving small farms vulnerable to low coffee prices and without incentives or resources to reinvest in their farms.

But the specialty coffee export organization Federación Comercializadora de Café Especial Guatemala (FECCEG) saw the potential and last year the mill processed their first cherries. Alongside the mill they also focus on technical assistance, organic certification, and entrepreneurship training for women.
